A Grieving Tarot

Tarot has long been a mirror for life’s most powerful transitions – beginnings, endings, and everything in between. But few decks hold space for the experience of grief with the grace and sensitivity of A Grieving Tarot, a new project from artist and grief support practitioner Sara Kathleen, now live on Kickstarter.

This 78-card tarot deck is a love letter to the grieving heart. It doesn’t rush healing, offer easy answers, or sugarcoat suffering. Instead, it creates space for sorrow, for silence, for memory. “There is no ‘getting over’ grief,” Sara writes on the campaign page. “But there is living alongside it.” Her deck is built for that quiet, tender in-between: not quite broken, not yet whole.

Hand-painted in a soft, subdued color palette, A Grieving Tarot reimagines classic tarot archetypes through the lens of loss. There’s no Rider-Waite clone here, these cards are grounded in lived experience and emotional nuance. Empty chairs, letters unsent, the hush of a quiet room, each image speaks volumes without needing to shout. The familiar structure of tarot remains, but the imagery has been carefully reworked to center emotional truth over symbolism.

Sara isn’t new to this work. In addition to her background as an artist, she’s spent years supporting others through grief, experience that deeply informs the tone and intent of this deck. It’s not a tool for prediction, but a companion for reflection. Each card comes with guidebook entries that include gentle interpretations and space to journal, pause, or simply be.

“When you’re in a dark place, you don’t always want to be told to ‘look on the bright side,’” says Sara. “Sometimes, you want a deck that sits beside you in the dark and says: You’re not alone. You’re not broken. The storm will pass.”

Sara Kathleen shares glimpses of her creative process, nature-inspired rituals, and moments of quiet reflection on her Instagram account, @sarakathleenuk. Her feed is a visual extension of her artistic philosophy—gentle, grounded, and attuned to the cycles of life and loss. From hand-painted tarot cards to woodland altars and pyrography work, her posts offer a window into a world where art and healing intertwine.
