"As lockdown was upon us, I knew I wanted to start a big project."

A lot of tarot decks were born during the pandemic.

Few have gone on to a third edition.

When Nicholas Ribera @chainassembly first discovered tarot, he was surprised by how much freedom existed within the medium. Artists could reinterpret the cards, create new worlds, and approach familiar archetypes from entirely different angles.

Five years later, Eros Tarot is still evolving.

Nicholas Ribera @chainassembly created Eros Tarot during the pandemic after discovering that tarot could be more than the Rider-Waite-Smith deck he thought represented the entire medium.

Five years and three editions later, the deck has become one of the most talked-about erotic tarot projects on Kickstarter.

We spoke with Nicholas about break-up sex as The Tower, why factories are more comfortable printing violence than nudity, and how an erotic tarot deck ended up helping couples have better conversations.

"Leslie and I modeled for some of the photo references, which was a fun activity on its own."

One of my favourite moments from our conversation with Nicholas Ribera @chainassembly wasn't about tarot at all.

It was hearing how he and his partner Leslie used the creation of Eros Tarot as a way to strengthen their own communication. Over the years, Leslie has become part of the project, helping with logistics, marketing, and everything that comes with bringing a deck into the world.

"Watching her describe the project to people in the same earnest, matter of fact style that I do is heartening."

“I always felt the pull to protect what can’t protect itself as easily, and always felt more connection with animal-life.”

Jack’s commitment to animal welfare is not a marketing footnote. It comes from somewhere personal, shaped by childhood, temperament, and a long-standing affinity for non-human stories.

After funding, part of his profits support conservation and rescue work, including Animal Refuge Kansai in Japan, where he adopted his own cat, Galahad.

Meet Jack.
Nonsense writer. Illustrator. Playing card designer. Ceramic cup maker. England to Japan by way of folklore, kendo, and ballroom dancing.

His latest project, Arcane Wildlife Tarot, grows out of a long-standing interest in how images behave on a surface and what happens when play and divination share the same deck.

“I see each medium as a new canvas to explore and new window to tell my stories. Here I wanted to take my experience with playing cards and explore a new history, the evolution of tarot and merger of art in play and culture.”

One thing that stands out about Jack’s practice is that he does not treat tarot as a fixed identity. It sits alongside books, playing cards, ceramics. Each project becomes a different surface for the same curiosity.

There is something quietly powerful about watching an artist trust their own instincts. No angel, no devil, just a smaller version of yourself insisting on the thing that needs to be made. David McKinsey’s charcoal work for The Liminal Deck sits exactly there, between doubt and knowing, hesitation and action. It is less about answers and more about listening closely to what keeps calling.

Chatting with David McKinsey felt like stepping into one of the spaces his deck explores. Soft edges, glowing thresholds, and a sense that something meaningful is unfolding just out of frame.
