The Quiet Rebel

Quiet Rebel Tarot, the latest Kickstarter project from creator and longtime tarot reader Lyn Thurman, is a tribute to quiet power, the kind cultivated by people who navigate life outside traditional norms, who find magic in the everyday, and who lead with softness instead of spectacle. “Quiet rebels might not be obvious at first glance,” Thurman writes, “but give them a moment, and they’ll show you the quiet strength of being truly yourself.”

Thurman, who has worked with tarot for over 25 years, designed Quiet Rebel Tarot to reflect a more inclusive and grounded spiritual journey. “I wanted to create a deck that doesn’t demand attention but holds space for people to be wholly themselves,” she shares. “This isn’t about shock value. It’s about authenticity, gentleness, and the kind of wisdom that’s earned through self-reflection.”

The deck could best be described (by a non-artistic me) as vintage surrealist collage with a modern twist, somewhere in the visual lineage of The Muse Tarot, The Rosebud Tarot and one of my favorite decks, Our Tarot: A Guidebook and Deck Featuring Notable Women in History. While rooted in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, the archetypes have been thoughtfully reimagined. The Fool becomes The Free Radical, The Empress rebels into The Badass Gardener.

I love love love the use of vintage photos in the cards, especially when combined with unexpected imagery, such as a lion beside a Victorian woman or a cosmic roulette wheel, in surreal, metaphorical compositions.

Whether you’re pulling cards for yourself or reading for others, the guide invites conversation rather than command. Like the deck itself, it’s built on the belief that inner truth is always more valuable than prescribed meaning.

In addition to Quiet Rebel Tarot, Thurman previously self-published The Sea Whispers Oracle and has successfully funded five Kickstarter campaigns. Her love of divination runs deep, and creating decks has become more than a passion, it’s a dream realized.

As Lyn puts it, “I never imagined I’d get to do this for a living. It still feels like magic.”
