Tarot is more than just a deck of cards—it’s a tool for self-discovery, transformation, and personal growth. For artist and tarot creator Kara, the VIA—PAX Tarot decks were born from a deeply personal journey, blending classical influences with modern introspection. In this interview, Kara shares the inspiration behind VIA—PAX, the creative process, and the evolving role of AI in tarot design.

When Kara first embarked on the journey of creating a tarot deck, she initially envisioned a single deck—what would become VIA. However, as the creative process unfolded, she realized that her vision extended beyond one deck. The names VIA and PAX, Latin for “path” and “peace” respectively, symbolize a complete journey—“a pathway to peace.”

“For me, tarot was a tool that helped bring more peace and balance into my life,” Kara explains. “Naming the decks VIA—PAX felt like an honest reflection of what they offer and what they’ve given me.”
The VIA—PAX Tarot decks are distinct yet connected. VIA serves as a reflective tool, incorporating keywords, prompts, and affirmations, making it ideal for beginners and seasoned readers alike. PAX, on the other hand, is a visually stunning, full-color deck inspired by Kara’s love for the Renaissance era.

“The Renaissance was a time of renewal and transformation—much like the journey tarot invites us into,” Kara shares. “I wanted the artwork in PAX to reflect that timeless spirit.”

Her approach to tarot was influenced by her own self-reflection practice. She found that tarot, unlike structured journaling, meets the user exactly where they are. “It doesn’t dictate the path—it illuminates it,” she says. This philosophy shaped VIA—PAX, creating a deck that serves as both a mirror and a guide.
Kara’s journey with tarot was rooted in a search for balance. After experiencing burnout and struggling with an unbalanced lifestyle, she sought tools that could help her reconnect with herself. This philosophy became the foundation of VIA—PAX Tarot.
“Most things in life exist in duality,” she reflects. “Even things we consider ‘good’ can become harmful in excess. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s about finding equilibrium.”
This idea is woven into the deck’s design. Each card highlights a specific duality, prompting users to reflect on where they stand within that spectrum. “It’s not about right or wrong—it’s about self-inquiry,” Kara explains.
AI-generated art has been a major topic of discussion in the tarot and creative communities. Kara acknowledges the controversy but emphasizes the intention behind her use of AI.
“I see AI as a tool—one that, like any medium, can support creativity when used with intention,” she says. “For independent creators who may not have the resources to commission dozens of illustrations, AI can offer a starting point—a way to bring a creative vision to life.”

Kara’s process involved referencing public domain artwork, particularly from the Renaissance, to generate imagery that was then manually refined and edited. Additionally, she collaborated with artists for specific elements, such as the floral illustrations on the card backs.
“I don’t believe tarot should become disconnected from meaning,” she says. “Whether a deck is painted by hand, digitally illustrated, or supported by AI, what matters most is the intention behind it and the experience it offers the reader.”
Kara hopes that readers will form a personal connection with VIA—PAX, using it as a tool for self-reflection and intuition-building. Her advice for beginners? Start simple.

“One card a day is enough to open up a meaningful conversation with your inner voice,” she suggests. “Tarot isn’t about memorizing definitions—it’s about listening, feeling, and trusting your intuition.”
Designed to be approachable and versatile, the decks are portable and easy to use, making them an effortless companion for both new and experienced readers.
“I wanted VIA—PAX to feel like a trusted companion—something to return to for clarity and peace,” Kara says. “In a world that often feels noisy, these decks are an invitation to slow down and reconnect.”
While VIA—PAX is a deeply personal project, it’s just the beginning for Kara. She has several ideas in development, including projects that had been shelved for years. “This deck was years in the making, and there’s more I want to explore,” she hints.

As tarot continues to evolve, Kara envisions a space where tradition and innovation coexist. Whether through AI-assisted design or new creative explorations, she remains dedicated to crafting tools that inspire self-reflection, transformation, and, ultimately, a pathway to peace.
